It can be very difficult to tell if you are suffering from sleep apnea, and in fact, it is frequently misdiagnosed.
Aside from irregular breathing during sleep, other signs that more investigation or testing may be needed include gasping, snorting or choking sounds during sleep, waking up a lot and loud snoring.
When you wake up, you might notice that you’re still feeling very tired, you might find it harder than usual to concentrate, be suffering from mood swings, or perhaps you’re often waking with a headache.
If any of this resonates with you, please don’t hesitate in reaching out. At Dutchess Dental Sleep, we specialize in personalized non-surgical sleep apnea treatment, carried out in a warm, comforting and relaxing atmosphere.
What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing during sleep. Whether it’s for 5 or 15 seconds, it should never be ignored. However, it can frequently be misdiagnosed.
What causes sleep apnea?
There are two different types of sleep apnea, each with different causes.
Because of this, you can’t get enough air, which lowers the oxygen level in your blood. Your brain senses your inability to breathe, and therefore rouses you from your sleep so that the airways can reopen.
You might snort, choke or gasp. This pattern can repeat itself up to 30 times each hour, all night.
Central Sleep Apnea
This is a less common type of sleep apnea – less than 1% of all American adults are known to suffer from this. The brain fails to transmit a signal to your breathing muscles. This means that you make no effort to breathe for a period of time – this can be minutes.
You might awaken with shortness of breath or have a difficult time getting to sleep.
Our Dentists have completed extensive training in airway issues and are proud to be able offer personalized non-surgical sleep apnea treatments.
